What is Context?
Context, the Journal of Health Students Taking Action Together is the nation's first student-run, online, peer-reviewed journal that highlights the exceptional work of health students in the community and recognizes insightful, well-designed evaluations of student-initiated programs. Context is published semi-annually and connects students across the United States and Canada who are working to improve the health of our communities from a variety of perspectives including: policy research, program evaluation, community partnership, and patient empowerment.

Why is Context Important?
Across the United States and Canada, students have initiated community service projects, advocated for their patients, clients and/or community partners, and implemented innovative programs that address their needs holistically. To maximize students' contributions and expand the number of students involved, however, students need to reflect on our service, communicate the contribution of community experiences to our professional careers, and formulate best practices. Context fills this gap and, in doing so:

  • Enhances the intellectual environment of the student volunteer community
  • Creates space in the literature for students to reflect on their experiences in communities
  • Increases the sharing of knowledge across geographic and professional boundaries
  • Develops a pipeline of community-based researchers, peer reviewers, and editors

Who Runs Context?
Context is an editorially independent, collaborative effort between Health Students Taking Action Together, Inc. (HealthSTAT) and the Student Health Alliance (SHA). HealthSTAT is a student-led, non-profit organization that mobilizes health students to take action on health issues confronting Georgia. Through leadership development, advocacy and service, HealthSTAT fills an important gap in the education of future health professionals. Ultimately, HealthSTAT works to build an ethic of service and activism among future health professionals that will benefit Georgia for years to come. With more than 200,000 student members represented today, SHA is the nation's largest coalition of students advocating for increased cooperation and collaboration among the health professions and working to improve the health of our communities.
